Purley Way was opened in April 1925 and was one of the first road bypasses constructed in the UK. It improved and re-directed the route of Coldharbour Lane to the east of the airport and diverted traffic away from central Croydon. In1932, it was the first road in the UK to be lit with sodium lighting.
